The first type is the potassium hydroxide and this type of lye is the most popular because it is easier to get out of the bottle and it is free from the chemicals that can create a fire. For this reason, it is the type that is used by most people for washing purposes.The second type is the sodium hydroxide and this type of lye is more difficult to get out of the bottle and it is still somewhat poisonous. It is more expensive than the potassium hydroxide and is less toxic. However, it is also a little more difficult to use. The third type is the water based lye which you will find in most recipes and is probably the safest type of lye for use with soap making.The biggest problem which has plagued soap making for years is the scum and lye. While this is not generally a problem, some batches of soap will develop an unsightly layer of this substance that sticks to the bottle and eventually begins to sink into the formula. This is an inevitable problem and some people can live with it but it is certainly something to be aware of and avoid at all costs.Soap making chemistry can be done by yourself or by getting help from a professional if you feel you do not have the experience to handle the job. Either way, you will be doing a lot of the work for yourself and in the end it will pay off for you since you will have some wonderful soaps that will delight you and those who come into contact with them.
